Obituary

RAPID CITY | Donald Church, 85, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was born in Watertown to Ray and Gladys (Torgerson) Church. He attended schools in Watertown, Milbank, and Red Brick School in Rapid City. He graduated from Rapid City High School in 1947. He joined the U.S. Navy that year and was an electronics technician. He had a medical discharge in 1951 and honorable in 1954. Don married Vera Adams in 1950. They had four children. After his discharge he worked with his dad and brother Bob at Church Sheet Metal and Roofing, Heating and Air Conditioning. Don enjoyed fishing and snowmobiling. He was a member of the American Legion Post 22, VFW Post 1273 and Calvary Lutheran Church. He was president of West River Snowmobile Club, andpresident of Rapid City Buildings Exchange which is now Construction Industry Center. Don was very thankful for his children and their families and was truly interested in their lives. Don and his parents were Charter members of Calvary Lutheran Church. It has been an important part of their lives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Gladys Church; and one grandchild, Mat Cody Church. Don is survived by his wife, Vera; brother, Bob (Marge); sister, Karyl (Fred) Weishaupl; his children, Larry Church, Ronald (Carol) Church, Karolyn (Phil) Bowman and Michael Church; four grandchildren, Cherice Anderson, Dustin Church, Kassandra Butts and Kyle Pexa; and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 23, at Calvary Lutheran Church, with Rev. David Piper officiating. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with full military honors rendered by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Calvary Lutheran Church.
