Obituary

Donald Wayne Horan, 81, of Rapid City died at his home on September 3, 2009 surrounded by friends, family, and his spouse of 57 years. Don was born on March 5, 1928 in Winner, SD to John & Mildred (Chamberlain) Horan. Following high school graduation he joined the US Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1949. On October 22, 1952 Don married Ellen Supik at Gregory, SD. They made their home in Rapid City. Don worked as a photographer, heavy equipment salesman, and route salesman for Metz Baking Company until his retirement in 1990. Don and Ellen had eleven children, six girls and five boys. He was a devout Catholic and a man with many diverse interests including wood working, sculpture, painting, pigeon racing, hunting, fishing, photography, and gardening. He loved his family and looked forward to spending time and sharing stories with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Ellen; one sister Joan Watson of Omaha; daughters: Betty Sullivan (husband Freddie Black and kids Stephanie, Jason, Greg, and Eric) of Albuquerque; Marjorie Felton (husband Jim, kids Andi, Ryan, Drew, Michael, Alex, and Nicole) of Douglas, WY; Jennifer Tangeman (husband Dan, kids Chris Kirkeby, Jack, Ashley, and Trey) of Basel, Switzerland; Char Laurenti (husband Steve, kids Jess Gikling, Gian, and Jeron) of Rapid City; Annette Berglund (husband Mike, son Connor) of Denver, CO; Andrea Horan (husband Mike Ray) of Rapid City; sons: Bob (wife Deb, sons Neal and Kyle) of Mechanicsville, VA; Clint (kids Cody, Afton, and Lauren) of Rapid City; Dan of Rapid City; Dave (wife Deb, kids Ryan, Tyler, Alec) of Rapid City; Tom (wife Sherri, kids Gabrielle and Nicholas) of Rapid City; and nine great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister. Visitation will be on Monday, September 7th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral Ladys Chapel. Wake service and rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Tyler Dennis presiding. Burial with military honors by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the S D. National Guard will be at Black Hills National Cemetery at noon. Lunch will follow at Cathedral Hall. Memorials can be made to Hospice of the Hills.
