Rapid City - Donald E. Mattson passed away on July 20,2023. Don was born in Mitchell, SD August 1, 1939 to Lewis Voznak Mattson and Mildred "Leona" (Maggret) Mattson. Don grew up in Academy, SD until six years old then in Platte, SD graduating from Platte High School in 1957.
He married his hometown sweetheart Janice (Jan) Erickson February 14, 1958. Don and Jan moved to Rapid City to work for Safeway grocery stores, in Rapid City, Deadwood and Scottsdale, AZ, starting as an apprentice then to assistant manager and to manager. Don and Jan moved back to Rapid City in 1964 where he became employed with Mills Drug Store. In 1969 he started work with 3M Best Business Products as a salesman for Western South Dakota. Then in 1979 his best friend and second father Pat Padgett convinced Don to try real estate at Century 21 Carlson and Padgett. Don then in 1981 bought Don Carlson's interest in the firm, which then became Padgett and Mattson. Upon the death of Pat, Don liquidated the firm. Don then joined Remax realtor until 1990. Then in partnership with ED Litz they purchased Black Hills Tent and Awning, then later purchased his partner's interest. Don and Jan spent the next years making lots of awnings and canvas products until retirement in 2003.
Don and Jan enjoyed spending winters in Mesa, AZ for twelve years. Don's great passion was becoming a master Mason of Lodge # 25 Rapid City, 32nd degree Mason Scottish Rite Deadwood, SD, a NAJA Shriner in 1974. He held the position of potentate in 1989, President of RC Shrine Club, Pres Flag Unit, Commander Air Patrol, Emeritis member of the Board of Governors Shriners Hospital for Children Twin Cities Minneapolis. Having held the position of secretary, treasurer, Vice Chairman, Chairman of the Board (2011-2012), serving for a total of 10 years. Past director and treasurer Royal Order of Sesters. Don's passion was the work for the children and all that the Shrine was about. He drove many miles to and from Minneapolis hospital hauling children and attending monthly meetings by the board for 10 plus years. His other passion was his grandchildren!!
Don is survived by a son Craig "Reggie" Mattson (Kris), three grandchildren: Erin Jensen, Davy (Mike) Collins, and Alex (Kim) Mattson, all of Rapid City, four great-grandchildren: Halayna (Jesse), Anneliese, Triston and Parker, two brother in laws: Jerry Erickson (Becky), Platte, SD and Dennis Erickson (Sherry), Rapid City, SD and several nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his wife Jan, his parents, two brothers: Henry and Wilbur, one Sister, Eileen, two sister in laws: Mary and Minnie, one brother-in-law Francis Beck, Father-in-law and mother-in-law Lawrence and Inez Erickson.
Inurnment will be at Pine Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Private Family Service with Masonic Rite's on Friday, August 18 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
Celebration of Life will take place for all friends and family at 2:00 pm at Shriner's Temple at 4091 Sturgis Road, Rapid City.
