RAPID CITY | Donald Dale Strachan, 85, died Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
He was born July 21, 1931, to the late Daniel and Edith (Frey) Strachan in Detroit, MI. He lived his early years in Detroit, MI, Fort Myers, FL, and Frackville, PA. He graduated from high school in June 1948. After which, he entered the United States Air Force in October 1949. He served as an aircraft mechanic and Crew Chief with the 28th Bombardment Wing until his honorable discharge on April 25, 1960. Following his service in the USAF, Don began his career with Prudential Insurance in Rapid City. He worked as an Agent, Sales Manager and District Manager in Huron, SD, Lincoln, NE, Waukesha, WI, and Billings, MT, before retiring from the company in Rapid City on July 24, 1989. Don continued his long career in service to individuals as a Charted Financial Consultant at his company Financial Services Exchange until the time of his death.
Don married Jo Ann Southworth on June 18, 1952, at Ellsworth Air Force Base and they had three children, Cheryl, Donald and Robert.
Don was an active member of First Christian Church of Rapid City for many years, serving as an Elder and Sunday School teacher. He was also an active member of the 28th Bombardment Wing Reunion Committee.
Don is survived by his wife, Jo Ann of Rapid City; their children, Cheryl (Michael Woody) Strachan and Donald (Carol) Strachan, all of Rapid City, and Robert (Kristi) Strachan of Phoenix, AZ; his brother, Norman Dee Strachan of Lincoln Park, MI; sister-in-law, Maxine (Ki) Caserio of Lead; four nephews; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 30, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, March 31, at the funeral home, with Pastor Paul Winkler of Zion Lutheran Church presiding. Interment, with military honors will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established by the family.
