Obituary

Donna Rose (Good) Embree

Donna, 87, left us to go to heaven on June 15, 2022, after a short battle with liver cancer.

Donna was born on August 7, 1934 to Alfred and Zelma " Peggy " (Goff) Good in Martin, SD.

She grew up on a ranch near Long Valley, SD where her family raised sheep.  She and her older sister helped herd the sheep, learned to camp in the sheep wagon, watch for the weather and the wild animals.  As the family grew with two more children and a set of twins, she helped look over them with her mother while her older sister helped their father with the animals.  About five miles from home, Donna rode her horse to school, attending through the eighth grade at the country school.

In the fall of 1951, at the age of 17, Donna married Robert Embree in Pierre, SD.  They began their marriage on a ranch near Long Valley.  They moved to Rapid City in 1955.  In 1970 they moved to Piedmont, SD, where they had a few acres and could be back in " the country " .

It had always been a goal of hers to finish school and in 1977, at the age of 43, she went back to school and received her GED, took classes and graduated from Western Dakota Vo-Tech in Sturgis, SD.  She worked at Owens Interstate in Sturgis for 5 years as a bookkeeper before retiring.

In 1990, they moved to Hisega and in 2009 back to Rapid City.  Mom loved her family most of all and enjoyed playing the piano, dancing and singing, sewing for the family, crocheting and embroidering, growing a huge garden to provide food through the winter, reading and was very active in the church.  She made a special effort to be present at any event she was invited to.

Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, son in law Chris Howie, grandsons: Matthew Embree and Nick Gunter, her parents, one sister, 6 brothers in law, 4 sisters in law and 2 nephews.

She is survived by four children: Kathy Howie, David (Janet) Embree, Bob (Cheryl) Embree and Connie Whiting,11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, three sisters, one brother, two brothers in law, one sister in law and numerous nieces and nephews.
