Rapid City - Dorothy J. Brooks died on June 19, 2012 at the age of 90, at Westhills Health Care Center in Rapid City, SD. Dorothy was born Feb. 21, 1922 in Colorado Springs, CO to Lillian and Herman Johnson. She was raised on a farm near Vetal, SD, attended Martin HS and the University of South Dakota at Vermillion. She was married to Glen L. Brooks on May 15, 1943 and they recently celebrated 69 years together. She & Glen were partners in business on a ranch in southeastern Bennett County for over 50 years where they enjoyed raising cattle, hay meadows, changing seasons & rural life. Dorothy's beautiful country garden was a favorite spot for many gatherings. Dorothy was a longtime member of the Tuthill and Rapid City Presbyterian Church, served as a leader in the Presbyterian Women's Organization, church elder & Sunday School Superintendent. She was a 4-H leader and a member of the Bennett County Extension Club, South Dakota Cowbells, Epsilon Sigma Alpha & Canyon Lake Senior Center. In 1997 Glen and Dorothy sold their ranch and moved to Rapid City where they made many new friends. She & Glen enjoyed many years of dancing, & traveling the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Alaska & Hawaii. She is survived by her husband Glen of Rapid City, two daughters, Dianne Rand of Albuquerque, NM & Carolee (Gary) Hoekman of Rapid City, one brother, Wendell (Elsie) Johnson of Martin & four granddaughters, April Master of Albuquerque, NM, Alisha (Jared) Likness, Amber(Eric) DeGraff & Jenna (Scott) Aberson & six great grandchildren, all from the Minneapolis area. She is preceded in death by her parents, Herman & Lillian Johnson, & one brother Lawrence Johnson. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, June 23 at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church, 710 Kansas City St. in Rapid City, SD, with Rev. Diane Janssen Hemmen, followed by a luncheon to celebrate her life. Burial will take place at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD. Memorials will go to Westhills Foundaton.
