RAPID CITY- Dorothy Mavis Ellingson went to her Heavenly home on Wednesday, August 3, 2016. Dorothy was born in Maddock, ND, on May 12, 1929, to Martin and Minnie Bratvold. Dorothy graduated high school from Benson County Agricultural Training School. In 1949 she married her high school sweetheart, Duane Ellingson. They were blessed with three loving daughters.
As a young mother and wife, Dorothy worked hard both at home and at various businesses in Maddock. In 1969 the family moved to Rapid City where she worked for several years as a secretary at the State Geological Survey Office. Dorothy was very helpful and supportive of Duane's career.
Dorothy's interests were everything Norwegian, and she was accomplished in them all including Rosemaling and Norwegian wool embroidery, but her true artistry was revealed in her beautiful Hardanger embroidery which won an award for her original design. Her Hardanger was also chosen to be included in the Fabric Across South Dakota exhibit. Her talent for cooking and baking, Norwegian and otherwise, was unparalleled. She was a lefse maker extraordinaire. Dorothy was witty and clever and loved all animals.
Dorothy was a Charter Member of the Sons of Norway Borgund Lodge. She was a past member of Immanuel Lutheran and North Viking Lutheran Churches in Maddock, ND; and a member of South Canyon Lutheran Church in Rapid City. For 18 years Dorothy was a volunteer at the Chapel in the Hills.
She was preceded in death by her husband Duane, her parents, four siblings, and her son-in-law Jack Kurle.
She is survived by her daughters Myrna Kurle of Broken Arrow, OK, Judith Duggan (Rich) of Coon Rapids, MN, and Donna Ellingson-Mack (Dave) of Rapid City; grandchildren Betsy Gerber (Brian), Michael Kurle (Amanda), Jordan Fickbohm all of Broken Arrow, OK, and Lynette LeFleur of Coon Rapids, MN; and; three great grandsons Jacob, Mitchell, and Jared.
A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 7, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with Rev. Bruce Thalacker officiating.
Inurnment will be at a later date in the Viking Lutheran Cemetery in Maddock, ND
