Obituary

Dorothy Dode Mae Messerli Norman, 90, Black Hawk, SD, died Monday, February 2, 2009 at a Rapid City nursing home. She was born August 22, 1918 in Mitchell, SD to Fred and Alice (Boyle) Messerli. She lived with her parents in rural Jones County until her family moved to Murdo when she was 12. At Murdo High School she played the saxophone and was the 1936 class secretary and salutatorian. She graduated from the University of South Dakota with a BA in Business in 1940. Her first job was teaching high school in Sherman, SD. She worked at Warren-Lamb Lumber Company and at Headquarters and the Civilian Personnel Office at Ellsworth Air Force Base. On August 1, 1943, Dode married Donald Norman in Rapid City. They met at a dance in Lead two and a half years before. The couple lived in Black Hawk and Rapid City. They moved to the Peter Norman 1881 homestead with their two and a half year old daughter in 1947. She was an active volunteer and a member of many organizations; Black Hawk Friendly Circle Club, AAUW, 4-H, Girl Scouts and the Cowbelles. Dode was also a church organist. She enjoyed being with her family, playing bridge with her friends, cooking and baking and watching political talk shows. Survivors include her husband, Donald, Black Hawk, a daughter, Nancy Norman-Uhl, and her husband Keith, Des Moines, IA, two sons; Thomas W. Norman and his wife, Georgia, Black Hawk and Joseph F. Norman, and his wife, Diane, Piedmont, 6 grandchildren; Elizabeth Norman Uhl, Los Angeles, CA, Elliot Norman Uhl, Silver Springs, MD, Michelle Henkel and her husband Cory, Plymouth, MN., Matthew Norman, Rapid City, Angela Jackley and her husband Martin, Sioux Falls, and Christine Vreugdenhil, Ardmore, OK. and 4 great grandchildren; Taylor and Wyatt Henkel and Michael and Isabella Jackley. She was preceded in death by her parents and her three brothers; Robert and Kenneth, Rapid City and Donald, Fresno, CA. Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM, Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont followed by a Christian Wake Service at 7:30 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 AM, Friday, February 6 at Our Lady of the Black Hills with Fr. Mark McCormick presiding. Lunch will follow the Mass and the interment will be in Mt Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City in the afternoon under the direction of Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. A memorial has been established to Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church.
