Dorothy Myhra was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, on March 31, 1924, the fourth of five children in the family. After a blessed 102-year life, she peacefully passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, with family at her side. She grew up in Fargo, North Dakota, where she graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1941 and from North Dakota State University in 1945. After a very short stint as an airline stewardess, she married John B. Slingsby on February 23, 1946. They moved to Rochester, New York, where John completed Medical School and an Internship. They moved to Denver, Colorado, where John did his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1953 the family, which now included three children, Diana Linda, Geoffrey, and Barbara, moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, where John began his private medical practice. Dorothy was proud to be a stay-at-home mother but also was active in several organizations, including Service League, YMCA Board, Church Boards, County Planning Commission, United Way, PEO, and Medical Auxiliary.
When the children were all in college, Dorothy and John enjoyed playing competitive Contract Bridge with both eventually attaining the designation of Life Master. She went back to school and received a bachelor’s degree in business from Black Hills State and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of South Dakota. Later, with John’s encouragement, she became a CPA and worked as an Accountant later teaching accounting courses at the Airbase for Black Hills State and for the University of South Dakota. She was a past member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accounting, the South Dakota CPA Society and the West River Estate Planning Council.
After John’s early death in 1993 she continued to work, but decided to retire when she was 75. She enjoyed golf, tennis, knitting, sewing, piano, and social Bridge. She traveled about twice a year to many foreign countries accompanied by close friends or family until her mid 80’s. She documented the trips extensively with photos and writing. In addition, she developed an amazing collection of dolls in native costumes from these travels. She lived at Westhills Village for over 10 years and really appreciated the assistance and care she received. She was always gracious and generous.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John B. Slingsby, and by all of her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her children; Diana Linda Simon of Steamboat Springs, CO; J. Geoffrey (Jackie) Slingsby of Rapid City, SD; and Barbara Williams and her partner, John Cordes, of Scottsdale, AZ. Also by her beloved grandsons: Caleb (Darcy) Simon, Topher (Oscar) Villasimon, Jason (Kelsie) Slingsby, and Taylor (Katie) Slingsby. She had five beautiful great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned at The First Congregational United Church of Christ in Rapid City, SD, on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 10:00 am. At that time we will gather to remember her long and gracious life. A short luncheon will follow for those that can stay. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Westhills Village Foundation, the YMCA, or to the charity of your choice.
