Bridgewater- Douglas H. Swift, 78, died Monday, January 30, 2012 at Diamond Care Center. Doug was born January 20, 1934, in rapid City, SD, to Harold and Clara Fern (Parson) Swift. He graduated from Rapid City Central High School in 1952. He served in the US Army for 2 years and went on to attend the University of South Dakota to earn a Bachelors Degree. Doug married Barbara Gale Buckman in 1960. Doug worked several years for the Boy Scouts of America in several capacities from scout leader to executive director to camp director. He spent several years working in the insurance industry. He received a Masters degree from Northern State University in Education Counseling in 1984. His career as a high school counselor started in North Dakota and then he went on to work at high schools in South Dakota. He married Arlene High Horse in 1985. Doug enjoyed being involved with scouting and Kiwanis Club. He was an avid rock collector and enjoyed his hikes throughout the Black Hills. He was actively involved in his church First Congregational United Church of Christ in Rapid City. He enjoyed time with family and friends. Douglas is survived by his children, John Swift of Kissimmee, Florida, Kathryn (Chad) Dobney, of Grand Junction, Iowa, Cecelia and Rachel Pumpkin Seed of Wanblee, SD. He has six grandchildren. Kelly, Athena, and Trevor Swift of Eagle Pass, TX. Patrick and Kasia Johnson of Grand Junction, IA, and Kaitlin Tjostem of Grand Junction, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Glenn, and his stepdaughter Morning Star High Horse. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.
