IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Duane Wilard
Lamb
September 16, 1925 – March 23, 2016
Duane W. Lamb, 90, of Summerset, formerly of Rapid City, and Newcastle, died Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
He was born on the farm near St Edwards, Nebraska to Chester and Pearl (McCone) Lamb on September 16, 1925. When his mother died, his father took on raising seven children on his own. Starting a new life, the family homesteaded on a ranch near Sundance, WY. Duane is remembered for his work ethic, working various jobs before starting with Sioux Oil Refinery in 1948, retiring in 1973. After retirement, Duane owned and operated several businesses.
Knowing what he wanted, through his audacity, Duane rode up to Gerry on his motorcycle and asked her for a date. Gerry said, for her, "It was love at first sight". They were married on January 19, 1948 in Custer.
Duane was extremely proud to be a grandfather and shared his knowledge and humor with the children. His hobby was remodeling old houses. Duane loved animals and rescued many, even wild bunnies, much to Gerry's chagrin, although he had a special relationship with his dog, Smokey. He loved to ride with Smokey on his riding lawnmower around the yard. In 2013, tragedy struck when their home was totally consumed by fire on Labor Day weekend, devastating Duane.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Geraldine "Gerry", Summerset, his children; Gary "Chops" (Cathy) Lamb, Newcastle, Twila Burke, Summerset and Tammy Gimbel, Casper, 8 Grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild, two sisters; Charlotte Engstrom and Lila Dudrey, both of Sundance.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, 2 brothers and his son in law, David Burke.
