Obituary

Hot Springs - Durwood J. Bouzek, 88, died Friday, June 5, 2015 at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice South Dakota Veterans Home in Hot Springs. Durwood James Bouzek was born April 19, 1927 at Highmore, SD to John and Gertrude [Vopat] Bouzek . He attended grade school in rural Hyde County. After graduating the 8th grade he attended Highmore High School, graduating in 1945. In high school he was active in football, basketball, and track. After high school he joined the United States Navy and became part of the Seabees. After his discharge in 1946 Durwood went back to farming with his father. In June of 1948 he married Arlene Grover. They raised 5 children. In 1992 they sold the farm after 44 years of farming. They then moved to an acreage east of Rapid City where he became active in the St. Therese Church and the Knights of Columbus. After 20 years outside of Rapid City, Durwood and Arlene moved to the Michael J. Fitzmaurice South Dakota Veterans Home in Hot Springs, where Durwood then became involved in the woodworking shop. He learned to use a scroll saw. He also worked with a couple of friends making large rosaries. They received wood from veterans all over the world. The wood was returned to these same people in the form of beautiful rosaries. Durwood is survived by two sons: Daniel (Margaret) Bouzek of Reno, NV and Doyle (Sara) Bouzek of Rapid City; two daughters: LeAnn (Joe) Knippling of Flandreau, SD and Julie Bouzek of Sturgis, SD; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and one sister: Ione Fromm of Valley Park, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Mable Arlene Bouzek on August 8, 2014, one son: David; and two grandsons: Jonathan and Brent. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Thursday, June 11 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Boulevard with a Christian Wake and Rosary Service at 7 pm. His Christian Funeral Mass Services are scheduled for 9:30 am Friday, June 12 at St. Therese Church - The Little Flower, 532 Adams Street with Rev. Bill Zandri officiating. Burial will follow at 11:30 am at Black Hills National Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard and the United States Navy Honor Guard.
