Rapid City - Edward Lou Kertzman, 87, Rapid City, passed away and went to be with Jesus on Thursday, April 28, 2011, in Yankton. Lou was born in Milesville, SD on June 12, 1923, to Henry and Angela (Griffin) Kertzman. He grew up on the family ranch and worked in the family's general store. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and spent time on Guam as a P-47 "Thunderbolt" mechanic. Following his service, Lou came to Rapid City and worked various retail jobs. He met Avis "Jo" Voorhees and they were married in Tilford on June 12, 1948. Lou then worked for over 20 years as a car salesman. He was also very involved with the Morning Optimist Club and served as their President. Following his retirement from car sales, he worked at Meadowbrook Golf Course, which became his home away from home. He loved playing golf and gardening. He was also an accomplished carpenter and built many projects for his family. He is survived by 3 children, Luanne (Monte) Dirks and Brent (Nora) Kertzman, both of Rapid City and Lynne (David) Schlottman, of Aurora, Colo.; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and a sister, Mary Koenig, of Westminster, Colo. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jo, his parents, Henry and Angela, brothers, Hubert, John and Paul and his sister, Kathryn. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 2, at Blessed Sacrament Church with Rev. Janusz Korban presiding. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be a Black Hills National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. with Military Honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Association.
