Obituary

Earl A. Hausle RAPID CITY-- Earl A. Hausle passed away Friday, July 1, 2011 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Earl Hausle was born Jan. 2, 1927 in Seattle, Wash., to Albert and Doris Hausle. He spent his childhood years in the Rochford area and the Hausle Family Ranch near Rochford. The family then moved to Spearfish where Earl graduated from high school on May 13, 1945. Earl served in the U. S. Tank Corps from 1945 to 1947. He married Mary Lou Salmon on June 13, 1948. To this union two sons were born: Don (1949) and Randy (1954). In 1950 Earl, Mary and Don moved to Pierre, where he taught in the Pierre Schools and worked part time for Brooks Furniture. In 1953, the family moved back to Lead, where Earl accepted a teaching position at Lead High School. He taught there until 1960 when he entered the insurance business for Mutual of New York and the family moved to Rapid City in 1962 when he became assistant manager for MONY. In 1964, Earl accepted a teaching position at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology where he taught courses in the Liberal Arts Dept. He also taught at National College of Business. He married Alice Kendaras (Johnson) in 1976 and they moved to Tennessee where Earl taught for Steed College, Eastern Tennessee State University, and was Dean of Professional Studies at Tusculum College. Earl and Alice made many good friends while they lived in Johnson City, Tenn. After his wife Alice passed away, Earl moved back to Rapid City in 1992. He loved the Black Hills and enjoyed fishing for trout and hunting white tail deer, as well as watching sports on television. He was a big University of Nebraska Corn Husker and Tennessee Volunteer fan. Tennis was a favorite sport which he played in his younger years. Earl had a wonderful sense of humor as well as a great strength of character and the ability to overcome obstacles which left a profound mark on all his friends and family. His service to the community was evident when he served on the Rapid City Council during the 1972 Flood. One of his loves was western South Dakota history and he participated in an oral history project which involved the Rapid City Flood. During his professional career Earl earned a B.S. degree in Education from Black Hills Teachers College (1950), a Masters Degree in Economics from South Dakota State University (1969) and a Ph. D. from the University of Nebraska in Higher Education Administration (1976). He was a member of Toastmasters and a past president of the Lead Rod and Gun Club as well as many other organizations. Earl is survived by two sons, Don of Rapid City and Randy (Tina) of Pesotum, Ill.; a stepson, Greg Ahrendt (Paula) and family of Fredericksburg, Texas; grandsons, Ryan (Chaley), Scott and Jake of Illinois; and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 7, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 8, at South Canyon Lutheran Church with Pastor Bruce Thalacker officiating. A lunch will follow services, with interment at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.
