Obituary

RAPID CITY--Earl F. Matthiesen, 92, Rapid City, died Sunday, March 8, 2009, at home. He was born August 19, 1919 in Murdo, SD, to Henry and Lillian Matthiesen. As a young man he enjoyed raising and caring for his horses. He served in the Army Air Corps from December 29, 1941 to October 30, 1944 during World War II. He married Clotis Hunter on October 2, 1942, in Charlotte, NC. After his discharge from the Army, they settled in Rapid City. They owned and operated Earls Poultry and Egg Market in Rapid City until retirement. They spent their winters in Apache Junction, AZ, where they loved to go to dances. Earl was a life member of the Elks Lodge and the DAV. He was very patriotic and was very involved in his community. He loved kids and always had a yard full of grandkids and neighbors. Everyone loved him and enjoyed spending time with him. He was an amazing gardener and had 50 exquisite rose bushes. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. Survivors include two daughters, Sandy Trowbridge and her husband Dave and Vicki Alton and her husband Alan, all of Rapid City, three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clotis in January 2009, one son Mike in 1977. Visitation will be from 4 until 6 p.m. on Friday, March 13, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until service time, which will be at 2PM Saturday, March 14, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with the Rev. John Keizer officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the Patriot Guard Riders, will be at the Mountain View Cemetery. A reception will follow the burial at VFW Post 1273.
