Obituary

RAPID CITY- Earl L. Moe, 89, died Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Clarkson Health Care. Earl was born to Oscar C. and Tone Gunderson Moe on December 1922 in Brooten MN. He was one of seven children, two girls and five boys. He was baptized and confirmed at South Lake Johanna in Brooten. Earl graduated from Brooten High School in 1940. He moved to Minneapolis after graduation and enlisted in the Reserve Corp in 1941. After attending Radar Training at the University of MN, he reported to active duty in the Signal Corp in 1943. He was transferred to Army Specialized training at Louisiana State and then to Syracuse State for Electrical Engineering. Earl was then transferred to the 69th Infantry Division at Camp Shelby, Hattiesburg MS. He spent two years in duty overseas in England and in Germany at the Siegford Line during the Battle of the Bulge, and then preserved position at Ludendorf Bridge in Remagen. The company was attached to the 9th Armored Division and spearheaded the armored advance across Germany where they were first to encounter Russians at Elbe River. After the war Earl was in the 7th Army HQ and returned to the US and was discharged at Camp McCoy on April 1, 1946. As a civilian he went back to the University of MN where he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1949. He served as an instructor at Dunwoody until the Korean War, then worked at Collins-Hegberg Electric as an estimator. He transferred to Rapid City SD where he worked for three years. At the project's completion he remained in Rapid City and worked for local contractors until 1958 when he started Moe Electric, which he maintained until retirement in 1984. He was also one of three friends who started Midwest Tire and Muffler and the TMA Service Centers in a five-state area. He remained partner and officer until 2005. His interests included hunting, fishing, life member of VFW, Elks, American Legion, and United Commercial Travelers. He is survived by his wife Bernetta G. Moe of 58 years, his daughter Toni McCormick and husband Steve; his son Leland Moe and wife Jean; six grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5pm to 7pm, Monday, June 25, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 10am, Tuesday, June 26, at the funeral home with Rev. Herb B. Cleveland officiating. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard. A memorial has been established.
