NEMO-Earl R. Palmer, 87, of Nemo, SD, died Sunday, November 3, 2013 at Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary Hospice House. Prior to his retirement, he had been an instructor of building trades and maintenance at Boxelder Job Corps. Earlier, he ran the union carpenter apprenticeship program for South Dakota and was a building supervisor for a variety of construction projects, the largest of which was the AT&T building in downtown Sioux Falls. His hobbies had included RV travels with his wife Anita, fishing, golf, hunting and cross-country skiing. More recently, he enjoyed gaming and cutting and polishing stones to make jewelry for family and friends. A proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Earl served in the European theater. He was a Battle of the Bulge survivor and military police officer in Germany for a year after the German surrender. He attended both the groundbreaking and dedication ceremonies at the U.S. World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anita, and his brother Don V. Palmer. Earl is survived by his children, Gary Palmer (Ellen) of Renner, SD; Debra Raye of Minneapolis, MN; Kathleen Bentham Britz of Durango, CO; Kevin Palmer (Susan) of Lincoln, NE; Sandra Palmer (Julie) of Tampa, FL, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great step-grandchild. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 6 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 7 at Nemo Community Church, in Nemo, SD with Pastor Nick Rombough officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota Army National Guard will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary Hospice House.
