Edna I Bingham, a long time resident of her beloved Black Hills, died on November 7, 2018 in New Underwood, South Dakota. She was 101. She was born October 4, 1917 in Gettysburg, SD to Lenora Potts and Edwin Kempf. Her early childhood was spent in Gettysburg where she graduated from High School in 1935.
She lived briefly in Pierre, SD and then in Mitchell, SD. She married Fred Bingham of Hot Springs, SD on May 15, 1939. They moved to Aberdeen, SD where she and her husband worked for the Federal Internal Revenue Office.
In 1948, they moved to Hot Springs, SD and made their home there operating an Accounting and Tax Business. Edna also was a graduate of the Chicago School of Design by correspondence during this time. On February 2, 1962, Edna was appointed Postmaster in Hot Springs, the second woman in South Dakota to be appointed to a First Class Office.
Upon her retirement from the Postal Service in 1979, she moved to Rapid City where she made her home until February 1996 when she moved to Pierre, SD for a short period of time. She returned to Rapid City in June 1997.
During this time in her retirement, she traveled extensively covering a good portion of the United States and world. Traveling was something she enjoyed very much. After this period, she became very active as a volunteer both at the Rapid City Regional Hospital and the Rapid City Journey Museum. In 2006, she was named Volunteer of the Year.
Edna was predeceased by her husband in 1968, her brother Edwin D. Kempf, her twin sister Elda Driggers, and her parents. She is survived by one nephew and two nieces.
She was a Life Member of the National Association of Retired Employees, American Association of Retired People, and a life member of the Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary.
