Obituary

Rapid City, South Dakota - Elaine Marie Cutshall Burgess, 94, Rapid City, passed into eternal life on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at the Hospice Care Center at the Department of Veteran Affairs - Fort Meade, SD. Elaine Marie was born to George L. and Anna K. [Olson] Halverson on August 13, 1921 in Elk Point, SD. She graduated from Elk Point High School in May 1938. Elaine enrolled in Sioux Valley Nursing School graduating as a Registered Nurse in May 1941, and accepted a position at Sioux Valley Hospital. After the onset of WWII, Elaine enlisted in the US Navy. She served at Naval hospitals in Oakland, CA and Honolulu, HI. She was honorably discharged with a rank of Ensign. Elaine was united in marriage to Hal W. Cutshall in April 1943. After the war, they moved to San Francisco, CA, Vermillion, SD, Chicago, IL, and finally to Rapid City, SD where they raised their family of five children: David, Georgia, Tura, Sandra and Steven. In each of these locations Elaine continued her nursing career. In 1969, Elaine along with her two youngest children, moved to Arnold's Park, IA where she was an ER nurse at Dickinson County Hospital. In 1970, Elaine was united in marriage to Carl T. Burgess. Carl and Elaine purchased and operated Rockerville Ghost Town, which they sold in 1975. For the next 9 years they divided their time between the Black Hills and Sun City, AZ. They moved permanently to Arizona where Elaine was active with friends and church groups. She was charter member of American Lutheran Church in Sun City, AZ. She returned to Rapid City in 2009. Elaine was a woman of great strength, kindness, love, hope, and extreme faith and leaved a huge void in the hearts of all who loved and cherished her. Grateful for having shared her beautiful life are her children: Georgia [James W.] Adams of California City, CA, Sandra Cutshall of Custer, SD, and Steven [Gayle] Cutshall of Rapid City, SD; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Gerald L. Halverson, her husband Carl, and her beloved children: David W. Cutshall and Tura M. Miller. Her memorial services will be 10:30 am Tuesday, October 13 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 5311 Sheridan Lake Road. Inurnment will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with full military honors.
