Rapid City - Elaine R. Campbell, 75, Rapid City, died Monday, December 24, 2012 at the Rapid City Regional Hospice Auxiliary House. Elaine was born April 30, 1937, the daughter of Clarence and Jane [Boyd] Lambert in Chamberlain, SD spending her childhood in the Chamberlain and Hot Springs, SD area. She graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1955. Her life later took her to Rapid City where she worked as a legal secretary and in 1965 married her husband, Charles Campbell who she met while they were both working at the Ellsworth AFB legal office. It was "Love at first sight" for both of them forever. They both celebrated 47 years of togetherness this past October. After living in San Diego for 16 years they returned to Rapid City to enjoy the Black Hill's peacefulness. Over the years, Elaine enjoyed working in her yard, playing with one of the many St. Bernard's, working on family heritage research, reading books, and in general enjoying life. On her 30th wedding anniversary taking her "Dream of a Life Trip" to Ireland and even returned again the following year to Ireland as she so enjoyed being there. In the following years they traveled to Europe to visit 15 other countries. If you had asked her about her travels, she seemed to "glow", especially Ireland. For the past 2 years Elaine went through 29 chemo and 50 radiation treatments for her cancer. Together she and Chuck would laugh when he would say to her that, "you glow at night from all the cancer treatments". She frequently used the word "amazing" while going through treatments. She was truly "amazing" and she always had a "beautiful smile" for everyone. She is survived by her husband Chuck and was preceded in death by her mother, father, sisters Edna and Betty and survived by her brother John. Her sister Betty was like a second mother because of the age difference. After Betty's passing, Elaine upon seeing a butterfly, would say "Hi Betty", as she loved butterflies, I guess they reminded her of "Angels" which she also loved. She did believe in Angels and is now with her "Lord God" and his "heavenly Angels". Funeral services will be 10:00 am Friday, January 4, 2013 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 910 Soo San Drive with Rev. Kathy Monson Lutes and Rev. Deacon Virginia Bird officiating. Burial of cremains will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD. The family wishes are no flowers but memorials may be directed to St. Andrews Episcopal Church or the Humane Society of the Black Hills.
