Elaine M. Novak, 94, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2014, at Fountain Springs Healthcare. She was born on March 28, 1920, in Platte, South Dakota, to Emil and Amanda (Odefey) Gropper. Elaine grew up in Platte and graduated from high school there in 1937. She was united in marriage to Warren F. Novak on September 12, 1939 in Brule County of South Dakota. Elaine and Warren farmed in Brule County for a period of 10 years and then in 1949, the family moved to Rapid City, where Elaine was employed at Rapid City Regional Hospital for a number of years as a seamstress. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Canyon Lake Senior Center. Elaine also enjoyed poetry and learning about and visiting Black Hills ghost towns. Elaine also enjoyed traveling and had made trips to Alaska, Hawaii and Australia. Elaine worked very hard and raised five fine children. She was a wonderful mother and was kind, gracious and had a good sense of humor, even through her health struggles. Survivors include 4 daughters, Carole (Jack) Binger, of Rapid City, Janice (Steve) Neimiller, of Easton, PA, Linda (Dale) Zikratch, of Riverside, CA and Susan (Fred) Weeks, of Walnut Ridge, AR; a sister, Marjorie Zeman, of Pierre; a daughter-in-law, Rev. Barbara Novak, of Spokane, WA; a sister-in-law, Clarice Preston, of Seattle, WA; a granddaughter, Stephanie Neimiller; 3 grandsons, Chance and Range Weeks and David Novak, and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Lynn Pease, who helped with Elaine's care for the past 7 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Warren in 1980, her son Terry Novak, a brother, Leslie and 2 grandsons, Stephen Novak and Zachary Weeks. Services will be at 1:00 pm on Friday, Oct. 31, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with the Rev. Barbara Novak officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Mt. View Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
