Obituary

RAPID CITY | Elizabeth (Betty) M. Amsbaugh, 95, Rapid City, was called home by our Lord on Thursday, March 16, 2017, at Rapid City Regional Hospital, Rapid City, SD.

Betty was born June 12, 1921 in Solen, ND, one of five children, to George and Caroline Barth. She was raised in Solen and worked at the lunch counter at the State Capital in Bismarck for several years. She was offered a job in the Co-op store in Williston and finally made the move.

One of the sources of entertainment during that period was "barn dances." Betty and her friend Josephine attended one such dance and Betty was sitting listening to the band and happened to make a remark to the lady sitting next to her, whom she did not know, that she thought the accordion player was very good. As the story goes, the lady replied, "Why thank you, that's my son Douglas!" Betty was introduced to Douglas by her future mother-in-law later that night, and as they say, the rest is history.

Betty and Douglas were married on June 6, 1945, in Williston, ND, where their four children were born; they lived in Williston for several years, later moving to Mobridge, SD, and eventually settled in Rapid City, SD. Betty was an avid seamstress. She made many of her own garments, and those of her children, as well as items for the home such as drapes, curtains and tablecloths.

Along with raising her four children and providing a good home, Betty was always busy helping the family as needed. She worked as a waitress at steak house café downtown next to the old Gambles store. She was a cashier at the old Piggly-Wiggly store on Mt. Rushmore Road. Many of you may remember Betty from the Three Sisters store at Bacon Park Shopping Center where she worked as the head cashier for many years. Betty was actively involved with the Black Hills Association of Retarded Citizens for many years and worked with the girl's workshop on West Boulevard teaching them cooking and other homemaking skills. For many years Betty worked at Southside Drugs on Mt. Rushmore Road. She also worked at Black Hills Milk Producers. Her last job was providing product demonstrations at Family Thrift Center-Eastside.

Betty's faith was strong and her love and support for her Church was unfaltering. She was active in her Church and was a member of one of the circles. She and her son Dale were often chosen to take the gifts to the altar during Mass.

She was loved dearly by all that knew her and will be greatly missed.

Betty is survived by her one son, James (David Lindner) C. Amsbaugh of King George, VA, one brother, Edward Barth of Reno, NV, one son-in-law, Edward (Sam) of Minocqua, WI, two grandchildren, James D. Raymond and Kristin (Matthew) M. Simpson, one great-grandchild, Kaleb M. Simpson, several nieces, nephews, and many special friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, two brothers, her husband, two daughters, and one son.

Christian Funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 520 Cathedral Drive, Rapid City, SD 57701. Visitation will be for one hour prior to services, with a rosary at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy in Betty's' memory be made to the Cathedral Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 520 Cathedral Drive, Rapid City, SD, 57701
