RAPID CITY- Elizabeth Victoria Ann Henning Young-Huff, 73, Rapid City, died peacefully on the morning of December 1, 2011. Liz was born August 4, 1938, in Clinton, Iowa, and spent her young life on the banks of the Mississippi River. She attended the University of Iowa, where she met and later married her former spouse Marshall P. Young. Together they moved to Rapid City where she started her family and built her dream home on the shores of Canyon Lake. Liz earned two masters degrees from Black Hills State University and dedicated her career to teaching in the public schools and by later counseling emotionally disturbed and at-risk students. Liz married James A. Huff in 1986. They lived in Washington, D.C., Treasure Island, FL, and Miles City, MT, before retiring and moving back to their home in Rapid City. Together, Liz and Jim traveled the world. They made numerous trips throughout North America, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. Mama Lizs home on Canyon Lake became a sanctuary for her family and many dear friends who would always find a cup of tea or a glass of wine, and a peaceful place for conversation. Lizs home was filled with family, great friends, good books, her beautiful gardens, and her Newfoundland dogs. Liz was known to the friends of her children as the groovy 70s mom. Liz was a third-generation member of the womens organization, PEO, and served that organization for over 50 years by holding progressively responsible positions as treasurer, vice-president, and president. Liz and Jim shared a love of the Black Hills and were long-time members of Wahoo. Liz took great pleasure in the outdoors and was an active member of the garden club and a master gardener. One of her favorite times of the year was Christmas. Liz enjoyed decorating her home with hand-made wreaths and was famous for her Christmas tree-cutting expeditions. Liz is survived by her husband, James A. Huff, Rapid City; her daughter, Trilby E. (Kelly) Christopher, Las Vegas; her son, William M. Young, Rapid City; stepson, Christopher M. (Andrea) Huff, Atlanta; her brother, William (Nancy) Henning, Cordova, IL; and her grandchildren, Nicole M. Young, Janelle B. Young, Marshall J. Christopher, Owen J. Christopher, Christopher J. Huff, and Kathryn E. Young; great-grandchildren Eleigh, Lila, Sequoia, and Parker. She was preceded in death by her son, James B. Young; stepsons, Allen A. Huff, Bruce A. Huff, and her parents, Gilbert and Norma Henning. In lieu of sending flowers, a memorial has been established for Chapter Q of PEO. A private internment will take place at a later date at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
