Obituary

Ellen Horan was a very tiny woman, but you didn't need to talk with her long before you could see that she had a huge heart. The mother of eleven, she built a home where everyone was welcome.

Ellen Marie Supik was born on August 3, 1932, in Gregory, South Dakota to Elizabeth (Mann) and Frank Supik.  She was the oldest of six children.  While in Gregory, she met and fell in love with Donald Horan, a photographer who worked in nearby Winner, SD. Don and Ellen were married at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gregory on October 22, 1952.

Following their wedding, Don and Ellen moved to Rapid City and raised a family of eleven children. Ellen loved being a mother and could often be found, with a baby on her hip, at school and church activities.  She was a Boy Scout Den Mother, PTA member, and Catholic Daughter.  She babysat several kids before and after school and was the church secretary at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral.  She was a loving grandmother, "GG" (great grandmother), and great-great grandmother.

She loved to spend time in the kitchen cooking and baking for her family.  Cinnamon rolls, kolaches, three bean dish, potato salad and dough-boys were some of her specialties and she often had after-school snacks for her kids and their friends. She loved berry picking with the family and making home-made jelly.   Ellen was a talented seamstress and quilter, sewing many of her own clothes and those of her children. She was proud of her Czech (Bohemian) heritage.

Ellen's Catholic faith was important to her, and she and Don were very faithful bringing their family to Sunday Mass.  They chose to build their lives around the Catholic faith, starting with a decision to build their family home close to the area where the Cathedral and Catholic school were being built.

Ellen passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family on September 27, 2022, at the age of 90.  Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her son, Clint (kids Cody, Afton, and Lauren); her parents; and three brothers.  She is survived by two siblings, Mary Ann Dahl of Buffalo, WY and George Supik of Albuquerque and 10 children, Betty Sullivan (kids Stephanie, Jason, Greg, and Eric) of Albuquerque, Bob (wife Deb and kids Neal and Kyle) of Mechanicsville, VA, Marge Felton (husband Jim and kids Andi, Ryan, Drew, Michael, Alex, and Nicole) of Hill City, Dan of Rapid City, Dave (wife Deb and kids Ryan, Tyler, and Alec) of Rapid City, Tom (kids Gabrielle and Nicholas) of Rapid City, Jennifer Alston (kids Chris, Jack, Ashley, and Trey) of Holly Springs, NC, Charlene Laurenti (husband Steve, kids Jess, Gian, and Jeron) of Tucson AZ, Annette Berglund (husband Michael and son Connor) of Overland Park, KS, and Andrea (husband Michael) of Rapid City; 29 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
