Obituary

Rapid City – Ellen "Judy" Judith Danley, 86, beloved mother and sister, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at Fountain Springs Healthcare Center, Rapid City.

Judy was born May 1st, 1938 in Pierre, SD, the oldest child of Esther and Edward Legner. She spent her early years in White River, SD and Seattle, WA before returning to live in Rapid City in 1943. She attended Cleghorn rural school through eighth grade and then went to Rapid City High School. After high school she worked at several part time jobs before becoming a surrogate nanny to the younger children in our family as both of our parents worked long hours.

In 1968 she married William Danley and in 1974 was blessed with the birth of their son, Randal Joseph. The marriage ended in 1985.

In 1984 Judy became affiliated with Black Hills Works where she blossomed. She enjoyed the comradery, employment, and all the activities, especially bowling. She participated in the Special Olympics for many years and managed to place near the top winning many medals and trophies that she was so proud of. Her special source of pride was her selection as one of the recipients of the prestigious Gala Award in 1997.

She volunteered with many service groups whenever she had a chance including the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Judy loved bingo, crafts and playing games of chance and her luck was sometimes unbelievable. Almost every time she went to an event that offered a door prize, she would win it.

She was a very friendly person and had a great memory for faces. You could hardly go anywhere where she didn't say hello to someone or wasn't approached by someone else.

Judy is survived by her son Randy of Loveland, CO; her brothers Richard Legner, Douglas Legner and Dana Legner; her sisters Joyce Casper and Janet Robinson.

She will be remembered as a very loving, social person who cared much about the people around her.

Memorial contributions may be made to Black Hills Works, which besides her family, made her life worth living.

Memorial services at 10:00 am Thursday August 1 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
