Obituary

The fields of Miner County rejoiced the day Elmer Ersland Lewis was born, July 5th 1930. If Elmer told you about his childhood, he would probably have remembered what the temperature was on any particular day. Elmer was the 5th of 6 children. This was the beginning of his love for family, living on a farm and of learning about hard, honest work. In 1948 Elmer met Nyla and the two were inseparable ever since. They eloped and married on August, 26, 1952 at Lac Qui Parle Lutheran Church in Dawson, MN. Elmer farmed the lush fields of Howard, SD, but the fields weren't the only thing that was growing. Their little family soon started growing as well: Jesse, Kathyrn, Michael, Dan and Thomas.

In 1960 Elmer and Nyla moved to the Black Hills and into their forever home in Rapid City, SD. Elmer started working on the set of How the West was Won. After production he drove truck and soon worked for Metz's Bakery, delivering bread. He started Lewis Agency in '74 and became a known name around the community for not only his work ethic, but also for his warm and friendly conversations. Above his work, Elmer cherished his family. Some of the best memories is being the Scoutmaster for all 4 of his Scout sons, endless hours on the lake with the boat and countless trips all over the USA. Elmer was not only a present and loving father he embraced being a grandfather as well. Elmer and Nyla were sure to be at as many sporting events as they could fit into a week. Being true to honest and hard work, he carried over these values to his grandchildren, who learned to love of the land like he did. Elmer was honored to swing by the ranches and appreciate the hard work of his family, a legacy he created and will always be remembered for.

Elmer passed away peacefully on August 24th, 2023. He was preceded by the death of Nyla in 2017. His calm and warm presence will be missed by his children: Jesse (Kathryn), Kathyrn, Michael (Barbara), Dan (Amy) and Thomas. His grandchildren include: Stephanie (Jesse) Sorenson, Lindsey (Tyson) Waddell, Danielle (Cory) Shafer, Adam (Jessica) Lewis, Jamie (Elise) Lewis, and Jake Lewis. His great grandchildren include: Taylor (Emily) and Mackenzie Sorenson; Will, Brady and Tucker Waddell; Brock and Addyson Shafer; and Abraham Lewis.

Services are scheduled for Thursday, August 31st 2023. Viewing and visitation will be at Westminister  Church. Visitation from 10:00am to 11:00am. The service will be 11:00am to 12:00pm and luncheon to follow.
