Elsie Rogge, 101, passed peacefully in her home in Rapid City on June 29, 2012. She was a loving force in countless lives as she inspired and counseled young and old alike. Those who knew Elsie will remember that she was a force to be reckoned with. Her sense of humor turned mountains into mole hills. Born on May 24, 1911 in Platte South Dakota to Olive and William Crakes, Elsie grew up in eastern South Dakota with her six brothers and sisters working on the farm, going to dances, hanging from windmills, and sewing beautifully for family. Elsie graduated from Ravinia Consolidated High School, went to Normal School, married Elmer Rogge and taught in various schools in South Dakota. After moving to Rapid City, she continued to teach school and graduated with a bachelor's degree from Spearfish. As a sixth grade teacher she was recognized for her uncanny ability to connect with challenging students and turn their lives around. Avid high school and college sports fans, she and Elmer were loyal attendees of most athletic events in Rapid City. They contributed generously to civic and educational organizations. She is survived by loving extended family and dear friends who will miss her bright spirit forever. Funeral Services with Interment will be held Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 11:00 am at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
