Obituary

Emma Rene (Neal) Malloy, a woman who found beauty in blooming flowers, the warmth of the sun, and the simple joys of friends and family, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, at Avantara Mountain View Nursing Home in Rapid City, South Dakota. She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and an impressive collection of shoes, scarves, and handbags.

Emma Rene was born on April 8, 1932, in Laramie, Wyoming, to Clifford V. Neal and Ivy Jo Voegtle. She was lovingly raised by her mother and stepfather, Bartley "Bart" Tillotson, who nurtured her and her brothers' deep appreciation for the outdoors. Whether fishing in the Black Hills, tending to her peonies and roses, or simply soaking up the sunshine, Emma Rene carried that love with her throughout her life.

She attended Cathedral Grade School and High School in Rapid City before completing nursing school at St. John's McNamara School of Nursing in Rapid City. Emma Rene dedicated many years to serving veterans as a nurse with Veterans Affairs (VA), where her compassion and kindness left a lasting impact. She was also known for her famous carrot cake, often shared with coworkers to bring people together.

Emma Rene married the love of her life, Arnold J. Malloy, on August 10, 1954, and together they created a home filled with laughter, faith, and cherished family gatherings. Her home was always welcoming, whether for Sunday dinners, cozy mornings over coffee, or spontaneous visits from loved ones.

They raised five children: Shannon Flett, Connie (Kelly) Leis, James Malloy (who preceded her in death), Gaylene (John) Raben, and Arlette (Dave) Wiege. She was a proud grandmother to ten grandchildren: Cori (David) Leis Burnett, John Raben, Jr., Dan (Leslie) Wiege, Cara Leis, Misty Flett (Singleton), Johannah Wiege, Aaron Raben, Stratton Flett, Ashlyn (Leif) Olmstead, and James Raben. She also delighted in eight great-grandchildren: Mason Raben, Lilah & Loretta "Quinn" Singleton, Kaden Raben, Arney & Flynn Burnett, Isla Wiege, and Oliver Olmstead. Grandma's house was always filled with love, hugs, and a well-stocked cookie jar, ready to make anyone feel at home.

Emma Rene was preceded in death by her parents, Bartley Tillotson and Ivy Jo Voegtle Tillotson; her husband, Arnold J. Malloy; her son, James Malloy; and her brothers and stepbrothers, Eugene Neal, Donald "Don" Tillotson, Bartley Tillotson, and Richard "Dick" Tillotson.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Rita #916, an organization close to Emma Rene's heart; the Pennington County Master Gardeners, as she enjoyed the Sioux Park Sun Dial Herb Garden during her time at Avantara Mountain View Nursing Home; or Storybook Island in Rapid City, SD, a magical place where children's imaginations come to life. The family encourages donations to support her legacy, her faith, and her desire to provide lasting joy for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Emma Rene's lasting message to those who loved her was clear: Stay close to your family, and always encourage the young people in your life. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy lives on in the flowers she planted, the meals she shared, and the memories she created with family and friends.
