RAPID CITY – Emory Dean Keoke, 79, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

He was born on August 16, 1946, in Sisseton, South Dakota, to Steven Keoke and Elizabeth Hairychin.

Emory proudly served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged.

A member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Emory was passionate about preserving and sharing Native American history. He spent more than 30 years researching and collecting information that culminated in the co-authorship of the book Encyclopedia of American Indian Contributions to the World, published in 2001.

Education was one of Emory's greatest passions. He earned two bachelor's degrees—a Bachelor of Arts in Indian Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW.

Above all, Emory will be remembered for his selfless and giving spirit. He consistently placed the needs of others before his own and approached every act of kindness with sincere generosity. A faithful Christian and devoted family man, he lived a life grounded in faith, compassion, and service to those he loved. His legacy of humility, wisdom, and unwavering care for others will be cherished by all who knew him.
