Estelle "Poxy" Lone Hill, age 78, began her journey to the spirit world Tuesday, October 10th at Regional Hospital in Rapid City, South Dakota. She was born on May 23, 1939 in Kenel, South Dakota. Poxy graduated from the Flandreau Indian School in 1957 and continued her education at Black Hills State University. She married Hobart Lone Hill in August 15, 1958, with whom she had 5 children.
Poxy worked for Sioux San Hospital for a number of years and is most well known for her work in casting for films as well as a costume designer. A few of her most cherished films are, Dances With Wolves, Crazy Horse, Thunderheart, and Lakota Woman where she met many of her friends with whom she made relatives. In the early 2000s, Poxy served her north Rapid City community running the summer feeding program at the Mother Butler Center.
Poxy is survived by her spouse, Hobart Lone Hill, she has one surviving sister, Shirley Marvin, one brother, Chief Leonard Crow Dog, 5 surviving children, Mark Lone Hill (Kelly), Mary Bowman (Eddie), Evelyn Weston (Chad), Jeanine Lone Hill, and Paul Lone Hill. 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild also survive her.
Poxy is preceded in death by her father Mark Walking Elk, mother Florestine Peltier, son Louis Lone Hill, daughter Colette Palu and 8 brothers and sisters.
Services will be held at the Mother Butler Center and will begin on Friday October 13th with a wake at 7:00pm, and Funeral to be held on Saturday October 14th at 11:00 am.
Interment will be in Mt Calvary Cemetery.
