Esther Lucille (Hagan) Udick, age 94, our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died April 15, 2009 at the Rapid City Regional Auxiliary Hospice House. She was born to Victor and Harriet (Christian) Hagan in Spink County, on August 9, 1914 and was the youngest of eight children. All of her siblings have preceded her in death. Esther graduated from Ashton High School and St. Josephs School of Nursing in Mitchell, SD. Early in her nursing career, she worked in Seattle, WA, and Cleveland, Ohio. She then worked at the Rapid City Medical Center for over twenty-five years as an office nurse for Dr. JD. Bailey, Dr. Robert McCroskey, Dr. Cowan, and Dr. Helen Jane Hare Gormley. Esther married Michael E. (Mike) Udick in Cleveland, Ohio, October 26, 1946 after Mike returned from World War II military service. They moved to Rapid City in 1947 and lived in Rapid City until they retired to Scottsdale, AZ in 1988. They returned to Rapid City in 1997. Esthers Catholic faith was very important to her. She volunteered in various church activities at both St. John the Evangelist (St. Theresas) and Blessed Sacrament Church. Esther was known as a warm and caring individual with a heart of gold, wonderful sense of humor, an engaging smile, and love of life, even as she struggled with failing health over the past year. Her determination to deal with any adversity is a source of inspiration and legacy to her family. She was preceded in death by her husband Mike, her parents, brothers Adrian, Norbert, Glenn and Earl, as well as her sisters Dora, Edwina and Evelyn. She is survived by three daughters: Jane Williams of Rapid City, SD, mothers care giver and companion for the past ten years, Sandra Eckhart (Will), Helena, MT, and Darlene Hruska (Joe), Sheridan, WY. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Kristy Hruska-Larson (Tim) Portland, OR, Dan and Joe M. Hruska Laramie, WY, and Robyn Brown (Jeff) and Kelly Brown, Helena, MT, and great-grandchildren: Sydney and Alex Williams, Portland, OR and Drew Brown, Helena, MT. She is also survived by her former son-in-law Jim F. Brown, Helena, MT. and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Sunday, April 19, 2009 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 pm. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be offered, 10:00 AM, Monday, April 20 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Fr. Andrzej Wyrostek presiding. Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
