Eugene (Gene) DeWitt, 75, Rapid City, passed away Friday, June 12, 2009 at Fountain Springs Health Care Center in Rapid City. He was born December 31, 1933 in Clemens, IA the son of Harold and Joselyn De Witt. He joined the U S Navy in 1951 and served until 1954 on the USS Fremont. On July 29, 1955, he married Ida Ella Moore and they lived in Sturgis then later moved to Rapid City. Gene retired from Black Hills Power and Light Company. Gene enjoyed remodeling his home, camping, motorcycling, snowmobiling, attending dances and traveling. In 2002, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. As the disease progressed, he became unable to continue participating in the activities he enjoyed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida, both parents, one sister, Haroldine Hiveley, one nephew, John Hiveley and 2 brothers-in-law, John Hormann and Gene Hiveley. Surviving are three daughters, Terra Rossi, Florida, Patti DeWitt, Massachusetts and Lynda Ross, Rapid City, one granddaughter, Sara Rossi, Florida, two sisters, Darlene Hormann, Oregon and Sarah (Richard) Rabb, Texas and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 16 at the Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 17 at the funeral home with Rev. Jeff Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the SD National Guard.
