Obituary

RAPID CITY | Evelynn Irene Heidepriem, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at her home in Rapid City. She was born in Lead, in the roaring twenties, the only child to Wilmot Odgers and Albert Hebert and delivered by a midwife at home. She graduated from Lead High School following in family tradition. She attended nursing school in Denver and married Virgil Van Heuvelen, and the couple resided in Deadwood, where he practiced Dentistry. They had a son, Richard Van Heuvelen, and Evelynn owned and operated a local ceramic shop for a time. She later worked at Adams Mercantile in Deadwood and eventually the Deadwood Chamber of Commerce. Evelynn and Virgil were divorced and Evelynn went to work as travel director for the Old West Trail Foundation promoting tourism in the Black Hills. In 1971, she went to work for National College of Business as placement director until marrying Glen Heidepriem, a pediatrician and eventually allergy specialist and the couple resided in Rapid City together until Glen passed away in 1986. Evelynn later enrolled in classes for antique doll restoration and eventually owned and operated an antique doll and toy business in Rapid City. She supported the Journey Museum and encouraged local interest in dolls, toys, and collecting. An auction enthusiast, she was a member and former regional director of the National Federation of Doll Clubs and a charter member of the Black Hills Doll Club, and remained active buying and selling both locally and on Ebay until her death. She was named to Who's Who in American Women. She lived life with passion and enthusiasm, enjoying every minute of her 87 years. She had an appreciation for the creative and the human side of life. She is survived by her son, Richard Van Heuvelen of Lead; stepson, Glen (Jennifer) Heidepriem Jr. of Rapid City; stepdaughter, Martha (Monte) (Heidepriem) McLane of Two Dot, MT; stepson, Michael Heidepriem of Rapid City; four grandchildren, Charles, Donna, Madeline, and George; one great-granddaughter, Autumn Rose; step-grandchildren, Josh, Jack, Michael Jr. and Heather; and friend, Deb Groshans. Evelynn was preceded in death by husband, Glen Heidepriem Sr.; her father, Albert Hebert and mother, Wilmot Odgers Hebert; and aunt, Mabel Elward. Her body has been cremated and memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Blvd., with Deacon Virginia Bird officiating. Inurnment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.
