IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Fay Nadine
Sorenson
July 2, 1935 – October 31, 2024
Fay Nadine Sorenson was born at home on July 2, 1935, in Gillette, WY to proud parents Amos "Benjamin" and Mabel Clark, and her brother Roger. A business opportunity brought the family to Rapid City in 1938 where Ben and Mabel originally opened the ABC Grocery Store on Omaha Street. Fay shared numerous memories of roller skating with her friends on the shiny concrete floor of the flour mill, playing and fishing along Rapid Creek and walking up to Dinosaur Park with Roger. When their dad needed a break from running the store he would take Fay and Roger to Mt. Rushmore to watch its construction, and she always spoke of her amazement at seeing the men hanging from "bosun chairs" as they carved and drilled the granite.
In her early school years Fay would walk to Wilson Elementary, but then after the ABC Grocery Store moved to Canyon Lake Drive in the late 1940's, she attended what she always referred to as "the little red brick schoolhouse" off of West Main, finishing her school years at Cleghorn Canyon School. When Roger left for the Navy in 1951, Fay stopped attending school to help her parents run the ABC Store. She later took a job at the Little Audrey Motel on Canyon Lake Drive and through owners Morris and Audrey Sorenson, she soon caught the eye of her future love, Delmer Sorenson, and they married in 1954.
By 1959 Fay and Delmer had welcomed four children, DeeAnn, Donnie, Clark, and Kent. Life was happy, but remarkably busy! She was a loving mother and "mom taxi" putting tons of miles on the red and black Nash Rambler station wagon. Fay was incredibly supportive of all the kids' sports and activities, especially baseball from Little League through Post 22 and Post 306.
While raising her children Fay enjoyed several occupations. She was a successful Avon sales representative, worked many years in the cafeteria of Steven's high school (always speaking so lovingly of her team) and worked for a couple of summers in the gift shop at Reptile Gardens. She was always involved with Westminster Presbyterian Church, helping with weddings, funerals, and supporting the church where needed.
Enjoying her empty nest years, Fay had such fond memories of camping and fishing with Delmer at Deerfield Lake in their camper. She became an accomplished quilter and loved gardening, growing vegetables and tending to the myriads of flowers she and Delmer would plant each spring. The two of them enjoyed their drives through the beautiful Black Hills. Often, they would drive to Deadwood for a little lunch and gaming at her favorite spot, Tin Lizzie's. During quieter times, Fay had a passion for reading to include novels and, of course, romances.
Fay's deep love of family then grew to include thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren who all adored her. She was loved by all and will be deeply missed.
Fay is survived by her cherished children DeeAnn (Jim) Schunneman, Donald (Mollie) Sorenson, Clark (Rene) Sorenson, and Kent (Shelly) Sorenson. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Delmer, her brother Roger Clark, and parents Ben and Mabel Clark.
