Obituary

Flora E. Peggy Hoffman, 95, of Rapid City, died Thursday, January 22, 2009 at a local nursing home. Peggy was born November 8, 1913 in Reva, SD to Merve and Mabel (Pew) DeWitt. She grew up in the Reva area, northwestern South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming graduating from Pierre High School. She married Lawrence Hoffman in Mitchell on July 9, 1934 and they resided in Ft. Pierre. While Lawrence served in the South Pacific during WWII, Peggy worked in the shipyards in Portland. After the war, they moved to Rapid City in 1946. Peggy cooked for road construction crews and at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. They started a second hand business which was destroyed in the 1972 flood the day after they opened. They opened a ceramic business called Clay Crafts, and Peggy retired in 1982 after Lawrence died in 1981. She took many car and bus trips around the United States with her sisters and traveled abroad to Germany, Holland and Mexico. She was a charter member of Blessed Sacrament Church, a member of the Moose Auxillary and the Canyon Lake Senior Citizen Center. Survivors include her son, Stephen Hoffman and his wife, Peggy, Bluffton, SC; two sisters, Dorothy Barton, Alder, MT and Irene Wood, Portland, Or., six grandchildren, Amber and Jay Steele, Rapid City, Andrea and Jon Patrick, Lewisville, Tx., Cody Hoffman, Rapid City, Stephen Hoffman, Dayton, OH., Scott and Dawn Hoffman, Hilton Head Island, SC. and Matthew and Kelly Hoffman, Bluffton, SC. and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, son, Gregory, brother, Jack and a sister, Iona Fox. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 am, Monday, January 26, 2009 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Fr. Dan Juelfs presiding. Inurnment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis under the direction of Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home of Rapid City.
