Rapid City – Forrest John Hills, known to family and friends as John, 85, of Buffalo Gap, South Dakota, passed away September 15, 2026. He was born February 22, 1941, in North Platte, Nebraska, and was adopted by Wendall and Dorothy (Evans) Hills. John grew up in Rushville, Nebraska.

A proud veteran, John devoted 35 years of service to his country, including a distinguished career in the United States Navy, where he retired as a Chief Legalman. His service remained a source of great pride throughout his life. John believed strongly in hard work and enjoyed building and creating things with his hands. He was someone who could be counted on when family needed him and was always willing to lend a hand. He loved music and singing, cherished his wife, Leona, and the life they built together, and valued time spent with family and those he loved. John also had a special place in his heart for children and was a longtime supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

John is survived by his wife, Leona Hills; his children, Veronica “Ronni” Hills, Alema Hills, Ramona Fair, Antonio Hills, and Randall Hills; Leona’s children, David Pershall, Daniel (Marie) Pershall, Mari Pershall, Angela Pershall, and Therese (Clayt Birmingham) Pershall; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wendall and Dorothy Hills, and his sister, Karen Semroska.

A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis, South Dakota. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis. A celebration of John’s life will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the American Legion in Hot Springs, South Dakota.
