Obituary

PIEDMONT - The Rev. Jack M. Birdsall, 83, Piedmont died Friday, Sept. 4, 2009 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Rev. Birdsall was a longtime Priest in the West River Diocese of the Catholic Church. He was born Nov. 8, 1925 at Omaha, Neb., the son of Edward M. and Miriam (Robinson) Birdsall. The family moved to Rapid City in 1937. Jack attended and graduated from St. Thomas Military Academy in St. Paul, Minn,, in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy from Oct. of 1943 until May of 1946. Following military service he studied for the Catholic Priesthood and was ordained at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rapid City on May 13, 1956. Father Birdsall served parishes at McIntosh, Faith, Winner, Burke and Hill City. He served as a Chaplain for the South Dakota National Guard and later served as Chaplain for the St. Martin Benedictian Monastery in Rapid City. Following his retirement he resided at the Casa Maria Center at Piedmont. Survivors include a sister, Judith Birdsall Marion, Appleton, Wis.; a brother, William Chaulk Birdsall and his wife Olivia, Ann Arbor, Mich.; four nieces, Mora Birdsall Yuhas, Ann Arbor, Ann Morrow Marion, Orlando, Fla., Marguerite Marion, San Francisco, and Kae McQuillan, Neenah, Wis.; and several grandnieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Temple Chaulk Birdsall. Christian Wake Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept 6, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rapid City. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, with Bishop Blase J. Cupich presiding. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the SD National Guard. Memorials have been established for the Priest's Retirement and Aid Association and the West River Diocese of the Catholic Church. Services are under the direction of Osheim and Schmidt Funeral Home.
