Obituary

Rapid City - Frances Ilene [Cunningham] Koupal, surrounded by her family, was called to Heaven to meet Our Lord on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at the Clarkson Health Care Center, Rapid City, SD. Frances was born in Armour, SD on September 25, 1926, daughter of Thomas and Dora [McGrath] Cunningham. She graduated from Armour High School and went on to attend business college in Mitchell, SD. Following her graduation from business college, she worked at the electric company in Armour. She met Daniel Koupal, the love of her life, at a dance and they were married on September, 30, 1947. They continued to dance together for over sixty-four years. Daniel and Frances farmed near Dante, SD for over a decade during which time their three children were born. In 1960 they relocated their family to Rapid City, SD and within a year after arriving, Frances and Daniel built a home on Cameron Drive where they enjoyed their family and friends for over forty-three years. Shortly after moving to Rapid City, Frances began her thirty-two year career with the Black Hills Power and Light Company where she retired as a Vice President of Accounting. Frances enjoyed life to the fullest. She enjoyed crafting, gardening, cake decorating, reading, traveling, taking long walks, and entertaining her family and friends. She was a active member of Blessed Sacrament Church, the American Business Women's Association, the VFW Auxiliary, the Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary, and the Blessed Sacrament Dusting Angels. She was a greatly loved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. Those grateful for receiving France's love include her husband: Daniel E. Koupal of Rapid City; daughter: Pamela [Van] Mettler of Piedmont, SD; sons: Dana [Jackie] Koupal and Gregory [Renea] Koupal both of Rapid City; six grandchildren: Rachelle Sutton, Carrie Tavenner, Shawna Lavene, Lindsay Koupal, Raeann Mettler, Lyndsay Smith; five great-grandchildren: Kaylynn Anziano, Jack Sutton, Samuel Sutton, Solas Koupal OConner, Sierra Tavenner; and nieces, nephews and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: Thomas and Dora Cunningham; her brother: Eugene Cunningham; her sister: Evelyn Crago and brother-in-law: Aubrey Crago. Frances's family is very grateful for the kind, loving care she received from the staff at Primrose Retirement Community and the staff at Clarkson Heath Care. Visitation will be 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday, July 5 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Boulevard and her Rosary and Christian Wake Service will be at 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am Friday, July 6 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 4500 Jackson Boulevard with Rev. Brian Lane as celebrant. Burial will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis at 12:00 noon on Friday. Memorials may be directed to Blessed Sacrament Church and Clarkson Health Care Center.
