Obituary

RAPID CITY- Frank P. Lahm II, passed away peacefully on the evening of January 15, 2013, at Rapid City Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1945 in the Panama Canal Zone, Frank was the son of Col. Lawrence Lahm, US Army and Eleanor Margaret Lahm. Frank was the grandson of Frank P. Lahm, a pioneer of military aviation, who in 1908 flew the Wright Flyer for the Army under the instruction of Orville Wright. He lived an exciting childhood residing across the globe including Texas, Germany, Colorado, and Oregon. He graduated from high school in Lima, Peru. He was fluent in Spanish. Frank II earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Portland where he studied languages and was in ROTC. During his time at the University of Portland, he spent a year in Salzburg, Austria. He also earned a Masters of Arts in Business Administration. He was commissioned into the United States Air Force in 1969 and moved to Tucson, AZ where he met the love of his life, Joan Louise Emmons. They married on July 8, 1972 in Tucson. He had two loving children, Bridget Lahm, Vancouver, WA and Frank P. Lahm III, Portland, OR. Frank served for 24 years in the USAF including being stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB, Andrews AFB, Vandenberg AFB, and finally Ellsworth AFB where he fell in love with the Black Hills. He retired in 1994 after a distinguished career earning numerous accommodations including SAC Chief of Safety. In his civilian life, Frank obtained a teaching certificate from BHSU and taught languages and substitute taught in the Rapid City School District. He was the Scout Master of BSA Troop 44 and worked extensively with the Black Hills Area Boy Scout Council. His hobbies included gardening, bird feeding, reading, camping, fishing, and loving his family. He was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his loving wife, Joan; daughter, Bridget, son Frank P. (Arla) Lahm III; sisters, Laura (David) Evenson; and Sarah Lahm; and his brothers, Lawrence (Gail) Lahm, Jr; and Dr. Arthur Lahm, DVM. Visitation will be from 6-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 24, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with a Christian Wake Service and Rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m. Christian Burial Mass will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 25 at Blessed Sacrament church with Rev. Brian Lane presiding. Interment will be at 1:00 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery with Military Honors rendered by the Ellsworth Air Force Base Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Rd, Suite 300, Jacksonville, Florida 32256.
