IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Frank Edward
Short
May 8, 1928 – April 23, 2024
Frank was born on his parents' farm south of Harrisburg, SD in May 1928. He attended school in Harrisburg and met Mary Ellen Warsing in high school. He had a car, so Mary was excited to date Frank. In 1945 he headed to Vermillion where he graduated from the University of South Dakota in January 1949 with a degree in Accounting.
Following graduation Frank started working for the Public Accounting firm of J.W. Sorensen in Sioux Falls and transferred to the Rapid City office in August of 1949. He received his CPA certificate in January of 1952, shortly after becoming an original partner in the accounting firm Dunmire, Short & Co. in November of 1951. In 1982, after various other combinations of names, the firm merged into the regional firm of McGladrey & Pullen, and he continued as a partner until his retirement on May 1, 1992.
Frank's professional legacy outside of the firm included serving as AICPA Council member, Joint Trial Board, and 50 Year Honorary Member; Chairman and Member of the South Dakota Board of Accountancy; President, Board of Directors, and Recipient of the Distinguished Service Award by the South Dakota CPA Society; President and member of the Rapid City Estate Planning Council; Member of the Industrial Committee of the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce; and Board member of the Rapid City Financial Advisory Council.
Frank lent his time and talents to numerous community organization as well, including serving on the Board of Directors and member of the Rapid City Cosmopolitan Club, receiving a 60 years of Distinguished Service Award in 2018; Member of the Elks Club for 57 years; Board member of the United Way; Board of Directors of Arrowhead Country Club; Board of Directors and Finance Committee of the YW&YMCA; University of South Dakota School of Business Advisory Council receiving the School of Business 50 years of Distinguished Service Award; President and Board of Directors of Black Hills Works; Board of Directors of the Northern Plains Eye Foundation; President and Board of Directors of West Hills Village; Diocese of Rapid City Financial Advisory Council member; and Parish Accounting Committee.
In July 1948, Frank married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ellen. They were married for 73 years before her passing in 2021. Frank and Mary Ellen were blessed with 3 children, son William, daughter Patricia Ellen, and daughter Gerianne.
After retirement, although continuing to serve on various boards and foundations, Frank had more time for fishing and fun… Black Hills and Montana trout, walleye fishing trips with the Dunmires, deep sea fishing in Mexico and Hawaii, and an Alaskan fishing expedition, where of course, his halibut was second to Mary Ellen's.
After losing Mary Ellen, his health began to fail. Having been in good health most of his life, it was a difficult road to navigate, and Frank passed on April 23, one day shy of the day he lost his son Bill 9 years earlier.
Frank was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Ellen, his son William, infant daughter Patricia, and sister Esther. He is survived by his daughter Gerianne, granddaughter Melanie, and sister Carolyn.
Frank will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father, and an adoring grandfather who will be forever cherished. He was a man of integrity and honest to a fault in his CPA career.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 am, May 1 at Blessed Sacrament church with Father Robert Kinyon as celebrant, with visitation 1 hour prior to mass followed by burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
We offer sincere thanks to West Hills Village Health Care and Hospice of the Hills for their care of Frank in his final transitional journey.
