Obituary

RAPID CITY- George Virgil Eberly, 86, Rapid City, died Friday, August 12, at a local nursing home. He was born at home- near Lawton, Iowa on March 28th, 1925 to Horace and Verda (Willen) Eberly. He moved to Leeds, IA at 12years old. He attended Leeds High School. He married June Frances Mary Lou Creighton on June 29, 1947. Two children were born to this union, daughter, Barbara and son, Dan. He was very proud of them; Barbara with her Science project traveling to Science Fairs, and Dan receiving his Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow at age 14. In Rapid City, Dan received awards for local and state welding. Virgil drove buses for S.M.B. Stage Lines. He started with Chartered Buses with High School, College Bands and Choirs. He then drove the Inaugural Runs for the Highway Post Office Bus to South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota. He drove over four years to Mitchell, and occasionally drove to Huron, Watertown, and Aberdeen. He averaged 100,000 miles a year. Virgil was in the Iowa National Guard 34th Division- 133rd Infantry for a period of four years. He and his family moved to Rapid City in June, 1965 to manage a motel and Rehab home for Veterans called Norris Peak. They managed the Veterans home for 33 years. Neighbors approached Virgil to help build a Fire Hall. Virgil and 25 Veterans mixed mud and carried blocks to one block layer for the first Johnson Siding Hall. He held every office except Fire Chief. Again Virgil and Veterans volunteered to help, buy, and rebuild Big Bend School into Big Bend Presbyterian Church. Virgil and Lou were the on line fire call until 911 came. He joined Grayline of the Black Hills for charter service on March 15th, 1966. He wore many hats and received a hat from Special Olympics and was an honorary member of the Naja Shrine Santa Claus unit. He considered the people that traveled on his charters, the worlds greatest people. His motto was, Live well, laugh often, and love much. He worked for Grayline for 37 years accident free and S.M.B. of Iowa for 13 years accident free. He was a member of Big Bend Presbyterian Church, Rapid City Elks Lodge 1187, and was also active in many other civic organizations. Virgil is survived by his wife, June Lou, Rapid City; he claimed she was his real Lulu. Daughter Barbara (Ira) Hinkle, Rapid City; son, Dan (Deb) Eberly, New Underwood; five grandchildren; Dan Hinkle; Annette (Randy) Carpenter; Kristi (Nathan) Hovde; Amanda Eberly, Lance Eberly; seven great-grandchildren; several great great nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the funeral home with the Rev. Herb Cleveland officiating. Burial will be at Pine Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
