IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Galen "Bud"
Leander Steen
April 1, 1926 – September 4, 2021
Galen "Bud" Steen, 95, died Saturday, September 4, 2021 at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital.
He was born on April 1, 1926, to Carl and Della (Beadle) Steen in Quinn, SD. Bud had moved to Rapid City and then to the Hermosa area, where he finished his schooling at the 8th grade. After school he worked various jobs from breaking horses to ranch work. He then entered the Army in June of 1944. During his service he was injured on the front line against the German army. After he was injured, he was sent to England, then back to Spokane, WA, to recover. His remaining time in the service was spent in the States until June 1946, when he was honorably discharged. He received various medals during in the service, including the Purple Heart.
After he was honorably discharged, Bud returned to the Rapid City area and continued doing ranch work and exercising race horses. He then worked in the construction industry until his retirement in 1991. For many years he rodeoed; roping calves and riding saddle broncs at various rodeos in South Dakota. It was said by others he was one of the best, if not the best cowboys at the time. Bud was one of the hardest working people. He was a "mans man" and his work ethic was to be admired by all. He was awarded master craftmanship awards throughout his career and received other various recognitions as well.
Bud also had a fun-loving, humorous side to him. He loved playing the board game of "Aggravation" (not really, lol.) If he was losing, he would upset the board game and us kids would have to beg him to play again, I'm sure the kids had nothing to do with causing his Aggravation, lol. He also loved playing ping pong, badminton, and shooting a game of pool. He really enjoyed visiting, over a few (wink, wink, lol ) cocktails/beers of any kind, with great friends and family, both young and old. He loved his country life, and loved taking care of his cows and his horses. He had many dogs throughout his life that were so special, and he loved them all dearly. In the latter part of his life, he had a couple very special cats as well. He loved petting and brushing his dogs and cats, and he especially loved giving them treats. This was his expression of loving them back.
He always kept busy, right up until he passed; from working on his tractor to braiding leather and making his special leather key chains that he loved giving as gifts. He also enjoyed having breakfasts on Sunday mornings with family at the Millstone Family Restaurant. Bud had a great love for his family and he will be greatly missed and his love will remain with us all.
He is survived by his nieces, Cathy Steen and Shannon Steen Chiolis, and her daughters Haley and Jessica, of Rapid City; his nephews, Mell (Connie) Steen, Fairburn, SD, Noel (Beth) Steen, Johnson Siding, SD and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Della (Beadle) Steen; his brothers, Martin Steen, Merle "Buck" Steen, Harold Steen and Lavern "Teek" Steen; his sisters, Peggy Marshall, Helen Bies, Alta Moran, and Gladys Matthews, and a nephew Tom Steen.
