Obituary

Ennis, Texas--Gary D. Gibson, 59, died suddenly at his home on Thursday, April 15, 2010. Gary was born on April 9, 1951, in Rapid City, South Dakota to Verne and Madgeline (Nichols) Gibson. He grew up and attended schools in Rapid City. Gary served in the US Navy from January 28, 1971 and served under the world on the nuclear submarine the USS Von Steuben until his honorable discharge on December 4, 1974. After the navy he worked on shrimp boats and had his own painting business, Gibsons Painting in Ennis and Rapid City. He was married to Debra Morton from 1990 to 2004 and was stepfather to her two sons, Kyle and Trae Morton. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Ennis and held the position of Outpost commander of the Royal Rangers, a youth group similar to the Boy Scouts. Gary also drove the church van that picked up children, seniors and others for church services, and he also helped with the church maintenance with his talents as a carpenter and painter. While living in Rapid City, Gary spent the winters months when he couldnt paint working for local security companies. Gary enjoyed hunting with his friends in Texas. He also enjoyed fishing and the time he spent outdoors taking photos, camping and boating in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Survivors include his mother, Madgeline Gibson, Rapid City; 3 sisters, Alverna Gibson, Black Hawk, Marlena (Thomas) Parr, Geneva, Ill. and Patricia (Steve) Griffin, Rapid City; his brother, Mark Gibson, Rapid City; a niece, Paula (Matt) Mitchell, Cedar Rapids, IA and their daughter Autumn, Cedar Rapids; several aunts, uncles and cousins in Ennis and Corsicana and his former wife, Debra Gibson and her children and grandchildren, Trae (Terri) Morton and their children, Landon (3) and Logan (1) and Kyle (Rachel) Morton and their daughter, Kylie (6) He was preceded in death by his father, Verne L. Gibson in 1990. Visitation will be from 4 until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City. Memorial Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid City with Rev. Dwight Stensgaard officiating. Inurnment, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard, will follow in Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, South Dakota.
