Obituary

Rapid City - Gary Kirkpatrick, 71, Rapid City, died Saturday, July 7, 2012 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Gary Neil Kirkpatrick was born on January 18, 1941 in Mott, ND to Stanley and Bernice (Reinhardt) Kirkpatrick. He attended Chandler Elementary and Mott High School. Following his schooling, he began working on the family farm until he purchased a dairy farm in southern Minnesota. He enjoyed working in the farming/ranching industry, especially with the horses and cattle. In addition to the agricultural work, he was a shop foreman for an automotive company for many years. Gary also purchased and drove over-the-road semi-trucks and trailers coast-to-coast for many years. When he decided to "retire" from trucking, he began working as a maintenance supervisor until his official retirement in April of 2008. Gary married Audrey Lindquist on May 30, 1978. Together they successfully blended two families. Gary was a very talented man with a number of interests, including horses, gardening, automobiles and music. He teasingly often said, "I don't like kids or dogs", when in fact, those were his greatest loves. Gary spent the last 13 years of his life dealing with kidney disease. Those years brought a new dimension to his life. Six months ago, he started dialysis, enduring those treatments and life changing limitations with a smile on his face and positive attitude. He will always be remembered for his teasing and bantering and the hearty laugh that ended every conversation. Survivors include his wife, Audrey Kirkpatrick, Rapid City, SD; daughters, Deborah (Jon) Markegard, Hettinger, N.D., Wendy (Doug) Dietterle, Meadow, SD and Kristine (Jake) Edge, Rifle, CO; stepdaughters, Shelly (Carl) Requa, St. George, UT, and Stacy (Brian) Rosenberger, Lawrenceburg, IN; step-son, Bradley Anderson, Fargo, ND; nine grandchildren, Matthew (Stacey) Barnes, Courtney (Dakota) Hulm, Mason Dietterle, Raymond (Michelle) Anderson, Tyler Anderson, Amity Anderson, Anthony Requa, Olivia and Keith Rosenberger; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by his parents; one brother and sister-in-law, Conrad "Kirk" and Elaine "Susie" Kirkpatrick; one grandson, Nathan Barnes; and one step-son, Craig Anderson. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Boulevard, Rapid City. Funeral services for Gary will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 12, at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 2000 Lancer Drive, Rapid City with the Rev. Bruce Baum officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2012 at the Hettinger Cemetery in Hettinger, ND with Pastor Dan Lindeman officiating. Memorials may be directed to Humane Society of the Black Hills or NAJA Shriners Travel Fund.
