IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gene K
Ickler
October 17, 1947 – August 31, 2023
Gene Ickler, 75, died Thursday Aug. 31 at Monument Health in Rapid City. Joining two older siblings, Eugene Kenneth Ickler was born in Plainview, NE on Oct. 17, 1947 to Marion (Walton) and Russell Ickler. His family farmed in the area and he attended high school in Verdigre, NE, graduating in 1966. The following year he was drafted into the U.S. military, serving two years in the Army. He achieved rank of E4 and was stationed at Baumholder, Germany during the Vietnam War.
After returning to the States, he met Kathleen Rose Dusatko at a dance in O'Neill, NE. They were married in Emmet, NE on Oct. 23, 1971, and moved to Rapid City in March 1974. Here, Gene utilized his GI loan to earn a Bachelor's degree in Public Accounting at National College of Business. After working briefly in that career field, Gene found his natural sense of humor and congeniality aided him greatly in the sales industry. He worked for the local Gambles store, Quasar, and McKie Ford and Courtesy Lincoln car dealerships. Later he was sales manager at JB Auto in Box Elder. Gene and Kathy were also owner-operators of Price Motel in Rapid City from 1977-80.
Gene and Kathy were blessed with two children. They attended St. Therese the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rapid City for many years, where Gene was active in the Parish Council and Knights of Columbus. Later they became members of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Gene was an avid fan of classic cars and 1950's memorabilia. He and Kathy enjoyed many trips to Deadwood, even up until the day before he died.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Marion Ickler, his sister Marvalene Rudloff, and brother Stanley Ickler. He is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 52 years, Kathy Ickler; his younger sister Nancy Vesely; his daughter Meredith Jean Bergin and husband John, and his son Kent Russell Ickler and wife Lindsay. Also surviving Gene are his 10 beloved grandchildren: Ian, Jack, Gianna, Russell, and Mary Bergin; Ambree, Ella, and Isaac Ickler; and Joe and Rylan Wermers. Also left to carry on Gene's legacy are numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends.
Gene will be greatly missed by his family, but they treasure the many happy memories he provided with his unique and jovial personality. Gene loved children and animals and had a soft spot in his heart for those who were suffering. He touched many people's hearts throughout his lifetime.
