BROOKINGS- George Warren Chell died on June 8, 2014 in his 92nd year. George was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 11, 1922. He spent 3 years in the Navy Air Corp and graduated from Purdue University in 1948. George never tired of proudly sharing that he played "tight end" at Purdue and continued as an avid Boilermaker fan.. In July of 1948 he married Lillian Larson and they had 64 wonderful years together. They had 3 children, Barb Schwartz (Chuck), Robert Chell (Carole) and Peg Kolden. He has six grandchildren, Matthew Schwartz, Mara Schwartz, Daniel Chell, Margaret Chell, Emma Jorstad(Josh) and Samuel Kolden and one great grandson, Axel Warren Jorstad. George enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing golf and duplicate bridge and other card games. His time spent with family on yearly reunions was the real joy in his life. George worked in the retail business and was the manager of Gambles before he became co-owner of Du-Ells Sporting Goods. The last 30 years he found his passion and worked as a Certified Financial Planner. George was active on a number of boards including Calvary Lutheran, Rapid City Club for Boys, Friendship House, Canyon Lake Senior Center and the Advisory Board of City-County Alcohol Programs. George was active in the Alano Club and was a member for 42 years. He was very proud of the many members he sponsored. George and Lillian were members of Calvary Lutheran Church for over 50 years. In addition to his children, and grandchildren, George is survived by one brother, Marvin Chell of Pine River, MN. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian Larson Chell, brothers William and Erwin and his parents Gilbert Chell and Meta Chell. A celebration of George's life will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church on Thursday, July 3, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Herb B. Cleveland officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors rendered by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the US Navy Reserve Honor Guard. Memorials may be directed to Alano Club or Canyon Lake Senior Center in care of Osheim Schmidt Funeral home.
