BOX ELDER – George L. Florey, Jr. 70, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at Ft. Meade VA Medical Center in Sturgis.
George was born on November 28, 1953, in Watertown, South Dakota to George and Ione (Sandidge) Florey. As a young man he joined the US Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. On April 20, 1974, he married the love of his life, Debbie Loihle. George was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1976. Together, he and Debbie grew their family to include two daughters, Patti and Alyssa. As a young family, initially they resided in Clark where he and Deborah were members of the Lions Club. George was a two-time president and was proud to have served in that role. Later, they moved and settled in the Black Hills.
During his career he spent time working on offshore oil rigs, owning and operating his own HVAC company and later, serving as a property manager of a campground outside of Sturgis.
George will be remembered for his big heart, outgoing personality and always being a hard worker. He was dearly loved and will be missed.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Debbie Florey of Box Elder, daughters; Patti Florey (Travis Jacobson) of Pierre, SD and Alyssa Bunkowske (Greg) of Rapid City, grandsons; Braxton, Caleb, Hudson and Holden, granddaughter, Brittany, three great-grandchildren as well as other loving family members and friends.
George was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
Friends and family are invited to a graveside service at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, October 14, 2024, at Black Hills National Cemetery. A funeral procession will depart to the cemetery at 11:45 a.m. from Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
