RAPID CITYGerald "Jerry" S. Davis, 78 died Thursday, September 19, 2013 at his home as a result of an accident. Jerry was born February 14, 1935 in Highmore, South Dakota to Darrell and Dorothy (Parker) Davis. He grew up on the family farm south of Holabird, SD. He attended Lake Chappelle Rural School and Highmore High school. He was a member of the football, basketball, and track teams and also played trombone in the band. He graduated from SDSU with a degree in Agricultural Business. During college, he was a member of the track team and ROTC. Jerry took his first teaching job in Parker, SD where he met his wife Marilyn Jones. They were married December 28th, 1958, after which they moved to Darmstadt, Germany while he served his country with the United States Army. Upon returning to the states, Jerry taught school in Parker, SD and Kingsley IA. Jerry then worked for the Federal Land Bank (Farm Credit Services) for 28 years, living in Mitchell, SD, Pierre, SD, and Rapid City, SD. Upon retiring from Farm Credit Services, Jerry was an investment broker with Edward Jones. Jerry was an active church member and was currently a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and a longtime member of the Pierre Square Dancers Club, the Mitchell Kiwanis and the Rapid City Cosmos. Jerry was most at home spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing and helping out with all manors of projects on the family farm near Highmore and helping his children and grandchildren with various home projects. Jerry's favorite holiday was the 3rd Saturday of October, never having missed the opening day of Pheasant Season. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bernard; and two infant siblings; and daughter in law, Jodi Davis. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, Rapid City; three sons: Marty (Amy) Davis, Black Hawk; Mark (Kathryn) Davis, Rapid City; Mike Davis, Pierre; daughter, Mari (Mark) Ascherin, Rapid City; brother, Dennis Davis, Highmore; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 23, 2013, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with the Rev. Josh Jones officiating. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery with military honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota Army National Guard. Memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church for Zoe's Ride, a handicapped equipped van for Zoe Jones, daughter of Pastor Jones.
