Geraldine J. Sorenson, 82, of Rapid City, died Sunday, March 30, in Sioux Falls, SD. She was born February 6, 1932 to Walter and Vera (Hillman) Gates, in her grandmother's farmhouse northeast of Canova, SD. She attended rural grade schools in eastern South Dakota, graduated Salutatorian in 1950 from Canova High School. She obtained her teaching certificate from General Beadle Teaching College. She taught in the rural Burbank Consolidated Schools and Red Top Rural School districts. On June 1, 1952, she married Kenneth Sorenson. They lived in New Underwood. She and her husband enjoyed bowling, hunting and travelling. They started to raise their family in 1958 moving to Rapid City in 1966. Work took their family to live in West Germany 1973 - 1980. She and her family traveled throughout Europe. They returned to live in Texas, 1980 - 1981 and Virginia, 1981 - 1983. She and her husband returned to West Germany 1983 - 1989, working for the Air Force's 2nd Weather Wing and continued her travels. They retired to Chapel Valley, Rapid City in 1989. She enjoyed tending to her vegetable and flower gardens and apple trees. She enjoyed visiting with grandchildren, family and friends. Her love for travelling continued throughout her years. Survivors include their children; Bradley and his wife Beth, Greeley, Co, Julene and her husband Gene Pike, Sioux Falls, Kenton and his wife Angela, O'Fallon, MO; 8 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; 2 sisters, Myrtle Eich, Rapid City, LaJean Gates, Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 3, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Burial will follow the service in Black Hills National Cemetery.
