IN LOVING MEMORY OF
G.J. (Jack)
Muller Ii
June 29, 1952 – December 23, 2024
Dr. G. J. (Jack) Muller II, 72, passed away on December 23rd, 2024 in Rapid City, SD, where he resided since 1984. He was born in Villisca, Iowa on June 29, 1952 to George and Lorraine Muller. Jack married Christine (Chris) Donohue in 1978 and they had four children together, Joshua (49), Allyson (44), Jacob (41), and Geoffrey (34). He was also the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren, Madelyn, Ella, Keelin, Michael, Geo, Jaxon, Rowan, and Anika.
Jack was a lifelong Iowa sports fan. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes as well as the Iowa State Cyclones. His toughest days were the game days between the two schools where he would always win and always lose. He loved spending time at his family cabin in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Jack also enjoyed spending time tinkering around, fixing things, and taking care of all the necessary things to keep the house and cabin functioning. He was also a skilled woodworker, making several pieces of furniture as well as wooden toys for his grandchildren. He often found stress relief down in his workshop, and later out in the machine shed at their cabin. Jack even converted an old shed at their cabin into a family favorite saloon named the Red Pony, where he hosted many beloved guests over the years, making their favorite drinks.
He was passionate about reading and retaining facts. He would frequently win Jeopardy contests from the comfort of his couch, but what he was most interested in was studying the teachings of his savior, Jesus Christ. He was a deep thinker and theologian and loved to share his faith and knowledge with others. He knew we were put on this earth for a short time, only to have everlasting life with Jesus.
He was truly a brilliant man. He attended and completed his undergraduate degree in Zoology at Iowa State University. Upon graduation from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1978, he was commissioned as a Captain in the US Army Dental Corps. He completed a General Practice Residency in 1979 at Irwin Army Hospital and served at Ft. Riley, KS, until entering an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) Residency at the University of Iowa. He received his MS degree and certificate in OMS in 1984. He and his family then moved to Rapid City and joined Dr. Roger C. Wilson in private practice. Jack was certified as a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1986. He retired from Black Hills Oral Surgery in 2017.
Jack was active in many community and professional capacities, serving on the Rapid City Regional Hospital Medical Executive Committee, the Board of Directors of the RC Community Healthcare Center, and on service clubs and church boards. Professionally, Jack was a Life Member of the American Dental Association (ADA), the South Dakota Dental Association (SDDA), and the Black Hills District Dental Society having served as delegate, Secretary/Treasurer and District President. He served as SDDA Speaker of the House, District Trustee, SDDA President and ADA Alternate Delegate for SD. He served on the Board of Directors of the SD Dental Foundation for 20 years including 4 years as Chairman. Jack also served four years as a member of the ADA Council on Ethics, Bylaws, and Judicial Affairs. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.
Jack was member of the SD Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and was a Life Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) having served in the AAOMS House of Delegates, on several AAOMS committees, and as Chair of the AAOMS Commission on Professional Conduct. Over his career, he had a special interest in Bylaws and worked on writing/rewriting Bylaws for the ADA, the ADA 10th District, the SDDA, the BH District, the SDDF, and the SD Society of OMS. As SDDA Speaker, he co-created the first SDDA Policy Manual. He has been a volunteer and Advisory Board member for Donated Dental Services and served on a dental mission to Costa Rica.
Jack was proceeded in death by his parents, George and Lorraine Muller, his sister Judy, his brother James (Jim) and sister-in-law Connie. He is survived by his wife, Chris, their children, Joshua (Jennifer), Allyson (Michael) Hughes, Jacob, and Geoffrey (Kathryn), and his grandchildren, Madelyn, Ella, Keelin, Michael, Geo, Jaxon, Rowan, and Anika.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 27, 2024 at Rimrock Church, 12200 SD-44. Private burial will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery.
